Easy Ways to Save More Energy in Your Monrovia Home This Spring
In Monrovia, we always welcome the arrival of spring by flinging our windows open and enjoying the breeze. But spring is also a time to plan for the long cooling season ahead. Here are some essential home energy-saving tips that can help keep your energy costs down this summer.
Replace your air filter. Scheduling spring HVAC maintenance should be at the top of your to-do list. You can get started before your technician arrives by changing the system’s air filter yourself. Keeping a clean filter in your HVAC system will help it run more efficiently and prevent breakdowns.
Turn on your ceiling fans. During the summer, fan blades should be set to run counterclockwise. This creates wind chill, so occupants feel cool without having to lower the thermostat. During the winter, reverse the switch, so fan blades run clockwise. This lifts chilly air up to the ceiling and pushes heated air from your furnace down the walls.
Get a handle on heat gain. Sunlight shining through windows and glass doors can help warm your home during the winter. During the summer, make sure to apply window film on glass and keep shades and drapes closed where the sun shines in. This will help reduce cooling costs, as well as harmful ultraviolet rays.
Check your air sealing. Over the winter, the sealant and weatherstripping around your windows and doors may crack or weather. Make sure to seal holes and cracks with caulk and replace worn-out weatherstripping.
Exhaust moist air outdoors. If you don’t have a ventilation system in your kitchen or bathroom, open your windows a bit and let the moisture out when you’re cooking or showering. Moisture buildup not only makes you feel warmer, but it can also can lead to mold growth. The best way to remedy this problem is to install exhaust ventilation.
